If you take a college photojournalism course, it’ll have a required equipment list.
I’ll bet right now it has D300 on it, and by the time you get there probably D400.
(Also about $5000 worth of lenses and other stuff.)
So bottom line, buy what’ll get you through high school, and expect to have to upgrade when you hit college.

I don’t think you will be unhappy with D80.
In a few years, you will be upgrading the camera so spend the money on good lenses instead.
I thought those two have the same resolution (10.2 MP)

Really? I was not aware that, with the new D300 out, that the D200 was much of a premium over the D80. A lot of people shoot with it because they want more than the D80 for not much more money. Plus, the D200 can meter with really cheap old AI lenses that hardly anyone uses anymore, but get this: They still perform better than a lot of modern lenses. Some of Nikon’s coolest lenses are AI. If your budget is so tight that the extra ~200 dollars is going to make a big impact, then get the D80; if not, then go for the D200.
