What Can People Tell Me About Gretna Green Weddings?
Getting married later this year but on a really small budget. Can anyone give me their Gretna Green experiences as we’re planning to go there to save money on guest list etc.

Gretna Green used to be the place were young people eloped to get married without their parents permission before they were eighteen, the ceremony took place over the local anvil by the local blacksmith.
The ceremony now is carried out by the usual registry official in a place licenced for the ceremony, it’s become very tourist orientated and is not a cheapie any more.
If your interested in the history of Gretna Green marriages up to the present date, visit this site, it first became popular in 1754!!http://www.gretnamarriages.co.uk/gretna_…
There are plenty of organisers on the web, this is the cheapest one I found.http://www.gretnagreen.org/
.
Gretna has the romantic perception
The age to get married in England was 18
and in Scotland it was 16
(still is)
and so couple eloped just over the border into scotland to get married there when they couldnt in england
yes you have the blacksmith etc
but in reality
nowadays, its a commercial conveyor belt,
one bride in, another one out
its very touristy now as well
if you can see past this then its great, but its not for me
its very rushed, you see the wedding party before and after yours,
its like a brides convention
**EDIT** for Mrs G
gretna ISNT the vegas of england
simple reason being
IT ISNT IN ENGLAND
The vegas of england. Usually seen as a joke by people in UK. My fiance and I discussed marrying in Comlogdon Castle in Gretna Green when we thought my parents werent going to pay for the wedding.. Thank god they decided too bc once I heard about their reputation ( i am from the US) I was sooo glad I didnt do it!
Dont do it. Its cheap and tacky!
ps my fiance’s name is graham too
I got married in local registry office, cheap rings, dress of ebay, etc etc. all in all we spent £300, everyone just gave us money as a gift and we ended up with £350, lol so £50 profit and we just went out for a meal ourselves afterwards, why should you pay to take 2 families out to dinner on your wedding????
The only thing I know about it is that is where couples eloped to when they did not have a licence to marry or were not able to get a priest to marry them in their town.
isnt that where kids and paedos go to get married?
